James and Lily Potter Died 30 Years Ago–R.I.P.

James and Lily Potter Died 30 Years Ago–R.I.P.

Thirty years ago today, October 31st, the most famous parents in children’s literature, James and Lily Potter, sacrificed themselves to protect their only son, Harry Potter, from Lord Voldemort’s darkness.

Many fans took to Twitter today to express their sympathies for the fictional characters’ deaths. As a self-proclaimed wizard and a valedictorian of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the fact that fans of all ages took the time to commemorate these individuals made me extremely happy. As a writer of fiction, it also proves exactly how influential someone’s characters — at first, mere imaginings — can grow to become in not only a person’s life, but an entire culture’s. Isn’t it truly magical?

Here’s what some people had to say:

HogwartsChamp Pimms ;): We’ll always remember the sacrifice you made for your only son. Your love was so powerful. RIP James and Lily Potter.

Potterology The Girl Who Lived: If anyone still needed proof of the strength of the Harry Potterfandom, RIPJamesandLilyPotter is it. The magic never ends.

MrsGinPotter Ginny Potter: RIPJamesandLilyPotter. You made your son the amazing man he is today, without even being here. Forever in our memories.

GingerProblems Ginger Problems: Keep Calm and Ginger On. RIPJamesandLilyPotter.

HarryPotterings Harry Potter Things: Thirty years ago our story began. Thirty years ago our hero was made known. To the ones who began it all. RIPJamesandLilyPotter.

UndeadDobbyy Dobby the House Elf: ”Harry, you are so loved. Mama loves you. Dada loves you. Harry, be safe. Be strong.” RIP James and Lily Potter

And finally, a little input for The Dark Lord himself:

Lord_Voldemort7 The Dark Lord: RIPJamesandLilyPotter is trending. Well, this is awkward…
